Harmonious Process Improvement

Inspection, Peer Review Record

One of the most difficult tasks in the development of a product is ensuring it is ready for the customers.  Testing is usually performed at the last phase of a product life cycle to determine a product¡¯s readiness.  Given the time constraints in the time to market, there is only a limited period of time that can be allocated for testing.  The question then arises ¡°Which parts of the product should be tested more thoroughly?¡±  The insight to that question can be answered from the results of reviews.

Reviews provide one of the best methods in verifying a product against its requirements and can be performed by the developers in the early phase of a product life cycle.  The conduct of the reviews does tell us quite a few things about how well the product was developed.  If the developers were keen in helping each other review each other¡¯s work, chances are the right conditions exist for the developers to perform well in the development of the product.  The conditions to perform well will more likely lead to a better development of a product, hence a better quality product.

The Review Statistics captures the conduct of reviews and displays the measurements graphically so that differences from the norm can be observed.  The norm is not considered the region of peak performance but the normal condition for reviewing source codes or documentation.  Any deviation from the norm is then considered as requiring unusual effort to conduct the review or to resolve the defects, thereby increasing the probability that there might be problems introduced or left undetected in the source code or documentation.
